XHTML Basics

An XHTML link has two ends, a source anchor and a destination anchor

Link starts at the source anchor and points to the destination anchor
The destination may be any XHTML resource (document, image, etc)
The anchor element, <a>, with an href attribute defines a source anchor
Destinations are defined by a valid url, the value of the href attribute, possibly containing a fragment defining a position in a file
The position in a file must be defined by an id attribute in XHTML 1.0
Previously the destination anchor could be an a element with a name attribute
Anchor elements cannot be nested or contain interactive content
The text or image enclosed by the anchor element is clickable by the user
Clicking retrieves the destination resource defined by the href attribute of the anchor element
